Sean Lally founded the office WEATHERS to embrace the potential overlap between the disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture and urban design. Recent projects include proposals for the Academy of Arts in Tallinn Estonia, an extension to the Stockholm City Library and a proposal for the urban redevelopment of Reykjavik Iceland.  Sean’s work has been featured in exhibitions and journals and has lectured at a range of schools including, UPENN, Syracuse, Cornell, OSU, and the Technion. He’s been a visiting instructor at UCLA, and an Assistant Professor at RICE School of Architecture before recently joining UIC’s School of Architecture as an Assistant Professor in 2009.  Sean is most recently a co-editor and contributor to SOFTSPACE, From a Representation of Form to a Simulation of Space, from Routledge 2007 and quest editor and contributor for the AD Journal issue entitled “ENERGIES – New Material Energies” through Wiley Press 2009 .

Ben van Berkel studied architecture at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and at the Architectural Association in London, receiving the AA Diploma with Honours in 1987.

In 1988 he and Caroline Bos set up an architectural practice in Amsterdam. The Van Berkel & Bos Architectuurbureau has realized amongst others projects the Karbouw office building, the Erasmus bridge in Rotterdam, museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen, the Moebius house and the NMR facilities for the University of Utrecht.

In 1998 Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos established a new firm: UNStudio (United Net). UNStudio presents itself as a network of specialists in architecture, urban development and infrastructure. Current projects are the restructuring of the station area of Arnhem, the mixed-use Raffles City in Hangzhou, a masterplan for Basauri, a dance theatre for St. Petersburg and the design and restructuring of the Harbor Ponte Parodi in Genoa. With UNStudio he realized amongst others the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, a façade and interior renovation for the Galleria Department store in Seoul and a private villa up-state New York.

Ben van Berkel has lectured and taught at many architectural schools around the world. Currently he is Professor Conceptual Design at the Staedelschule in Frankfurt am Main. Central to his teaching is the inclusive approach of architectural works integrating virtual and material organization and engineering constructions.

CLEAR VILLAGE

The CLEAR Village Lab is a three-day, immersive event gathering together passionate
professionals from a variety of disciplines to create the masterplan strategy for a real-life
sustainable village.
The intention of this initiative is not to build a ‘perfect place’, but rather to foster a dynamic,
living community which embraces principles, technologies and forms of governance that
allow for a more sustainable future of living and can provide a benchmark for other
communities to follow.
The 2009 Lab is the first in a series which will develop the masterplan through multiple
phases until building is ready to commence. At this first CLEAR Village Lab participants will
be allowed the space to contribute as openly, creatively and emotionally as they wish.

Cost: 550€ per person. This fee is to cover the costs of administration and food for the
three days.
Food & Drink: A mainly vegetarian, ‘raw-style’ buffet will be provided on each day of the
Lab.

Marta Malé-Alemany to Judge 2009 MEMAR Awards

IAAC Master Program Co-director Marta Malé-Alemany will judge the renowned MEMAR Award in Teheran (Iran) on November 7-8.

Memar is one of the most established architectural magazines in Iran, showcasing Contemporary and historical Iranian architecture, as well as international projects. For the past 9 years this magazine has held an annual Award Ceremony to give prizes to the best completed projects (residential and non-residential). Previous international jurors include Fumihiko Maki (Japan), Hadi Tehrani (BRT Architekten, Germany), Nader Tehrani (Office dA, USA), Mohsen Mostafavi (Harvard director, USA), Farrokh Derakhshani (director of the Aga Khan Award, Switzerland), and Vicente Guallart (IAAC director, Spain).

LaN announces its second ON-SITE:

Barcelona workshop with modules to be held August 10-30, 2009. In 2008, LaN’s first BCN workshop at IaaC / Institute for advanced architecture of Catalonia drew participants from 12 countries to attend lectures and technical seminars furthering their understanding of digital design and fabrication in architecture. This year LaN extends the wrkshp with parallel intro sessions in all LAN ports–Barcelona / Boulder / Brooklyn / Bozeman (Aug 10-12). In 2009, you choose your modules.
