MAA Graduation Ceremony

The 8th Edition of the Master in Advanced Architecture of Catalonia has finished with a closing graduation ceremony that took place on June 28th. Students from more than 24 countries like Australia, Argentina, Canada, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Poland, India, between others received their MAA Diplomas given by the Master Directors: Vicente Guallart, Willy Muller and Marta Malé Alemany.

The Master in Advanced Architecture is an innovative educational format that offers interdisciplinary skills and understanding through the researching of territorial, architectural and parametric design operations for the production of Self-sufficient Habitats.
MAA 08 Thesis Projects Final Review

Thesis Projects will address specific issues relating to the self-sufficiency agenda, as well as the inherent material, organizational and spatial complexities determined by the chosen working scale and the experience gained during the year.

IaaC Releases the new Prospectus&Projects 2008.09 Book

IaaC offers a downloadable version of the forthcoming publication: IaaC Prospectus&Projects 2008.09.
The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IaaC) is an international centre for research, education, and development oriented towards architecture as a discipline that addresses different scales of territorial analysis and urban development as well as diverse architectural projects, digital processes and information environments. The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia offers a three-term Master’s programme in Architecture and Urbanism accredited by the Fundació Politècnica de Catalunya. Directors Vicente Guallart, Willy Müller and Marta Malé-Alemany, together with the rest of the teaching staff, are committed to a long-term prospectus of creating an international research and academic centre in Barcelona, bringing together international students, tutors and researchers from different fields in order to materialize experimental forms of communication, dwelling and planning.
IaaC Summer Workshop > The Venice Biennale

El Instituto de Arquitectura Avanzada de Cataluña organiza un taller de verano de fabricación digital. El objetivo es producir la instalación que el Iaac y el Bcn Fab Lab y Guallart Architects presentaran en la Bienal de Venecia, a partir de técnicas de fabricación digital, en las que se integran tecnologías de información.
La instalación titulada: Hyperhabitat: Reprograming the World, reproducirá a escala 1.1 una vivienda para jóvenes con espacios compartidos, fabricada con metacrilato, relacionada mediante sistemas informacionales, con redes y sistemas urbanos de otras escalas. En la producción de la instalación participarán diseñadores multimedia, programadores, diseñadores y otros especialistas.

Requisitos: Se admitirán arquitectos y estudiantes de arquitectura y diseño, con conocimiento de diseño por ordenador.
Objetivo: El objetivo será fabricar objetos para el pabellón, a partir de fabricación digital con maquinas láser, y otras técnicas, que los participantes podrán aprender durante el taller.
Selección: cada taller contará con 20 participantes. Se dividirá el taller en dos subtalleres de dos semanas. Se podrán inscribir en uno o dos talleres.
Fase 3: de entre aquellos que hayan participado en los dos talleres, se elegirán un máximo de 5 personas para viajar a Venecia para montar la instalación
Duración: El taller se divide en tres periodos:
Taller 1: 07 Jul- -19 Jul
Taller 2: 21-Jul-02 Ago
Taller Montaje: 04 Ago-11-Ago
Inscripción: la inscripción se podrá realizar hasta el 25 de junio de 2008.
Antes del día º15 de junio se notificará los candidatos seleccionados. Los candidatos podrán aplicar para la inscripcion en diferentes fases del taller o todas juntas.
Todos los participantes del taller que lo completen con éxito serán citados como participantes en la producción de la instalación en la Bienal de Venecia.
Alojamiento: Los estudiantes deberán buscar opciones de alojamiento dentro de Barcelona.

Buenas Noticias en torno al Urbanismo es una reunión de expertos que quiere promover la innovación en la habitabilidad del territorio a partir de la interacción de disciplinas diversas tales como la arquitectura, el urbanismo, la política, la sociología, la ingeniería, el paisajismo, el turismo, la economía o la geografía. A partir de experiencias concretas que operan a escalas diversas, se pretende identificar tendencias e iniciativas claves para el progreso del territorio en los próximos años.
LaN-On-Site: BARCELONA SUMMER WORK/SHOP

LaN | WORK/SHOP is an intensive, 14-day workshop based in Barcelona, Spain, that will approach the investigation of urban domains through the use of scripting and digital fabrication. Workshop is hosted by IaaC: Institut d'Arquitectura Avançada de Catalunya and directed by LaN | Live Architecture Network.
Professional and student architects, urbanists, designers, artists [and related fields], are invited to Barcelona from the 8th-22nd of August 2008 to engage in a collective investigation of the city through the use of advanced digital tools, and computer numerically controlled fabrication techniques.

IaaC Open Doors

EL IAAC CONTRIBUYE A HACER DE BARCELONA LA CIUDAD DEL CONOCIMIENTO, ATRAYENDO A INVESTIGADORES DE 24 PAÍSES.
El IaaC acoge actualmente el máster más internacional del país, donde se dan cita investigadores y estudiantes de 24 países. Pese a estar en Barcelona, el idioma oficial de la institución es el inglés. Su director, Vicente Guallart, afirma que “es una pequeña ONU en el centro de Barcelona”. Iraquíes, indios y chinos trabajan codo con codo para desarrollar proyectos de investigación y análisis territoriales y de desarrollo urbano.
El Presidente del IAAC, Francesc Fernández apuesta porque Barcelona se convierta en un centro internacional de conocimiento. “Si hace años nuestros investigadores salían al extranjero a estudiar, ahora se trata de que los futuros líderes vengan a estudiar aquí. Esta red internacional de conocimiento que estamos generando impulsará el desarrollo económico de la ciudad a medio plazo. Traer a futuros líderes urbanos de diversos países del mundo fomenta la centralidad económica de Barcelona ya que nos convertimos en un referente. Es lo que han hecho los americanos durante todo el siglo XX. América es América porque Harvard forma a los líderes mundiales.”
Desde el Iaac se lanza el mensaje de que Barcelona tiene la oportunidad de convertirse en un centro de experimentación urbana.
El Martes 20 de Mayo el IaaC ha reunido a consules y representantes de mas de 14 países del mundo, quienes junto con Vicente Guallart, director del IaaC, Francesc Fernandez, Presidente del IaaC, Ramón García Bragado, teniente de alcalde de Vivienda, Urbanismo y Régimen Interior del Ayuntamiento de Barcelona, y los estudiantes del IaaC, presentaron los ultimos proyectos de investigacion que desarrolla el instituto, asi como tambien los proyectos futuros que incluyen diferentes investigaciones en la India y Barcelona.

Romania Case Study > Self-sufficient Proposals for an emergent country

The Development Studio will be carried out starting with a field trip to Southeastern European country of Romania by the students and tutors research group. The target of this studio is the proposal of urban redevelopments, planning strategies and the proposal of new settlements in either ¨problematic¨ or ¨potential¨ specified areas in the case study of the city of Romania (Bucharest, Constanta).
The specific case studies and principles of the urban redevelopment and the new settlements will be defined during and after the field trip.

On Tuesday 20th of May we are celebrating at IaaC the event of ¨Open Doors¨.
In this event we will be presenting the activities of IaaC for the academic year 2008-09 and four exhibitions of projects developed during the academic year 2007-08.
The presentations will be done with the presence of the consuls of IaaC´s students countries:
Germany, Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Cyprus, China, Colombia, Ecuador, United States, Greece, India, Irak, Iceland, Italy, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Russia, Thailand, Turkey, Venezuela. as representatives of the cultural and academic world of Barcelona.
The event will be presided by Mr. Vicente Guallart, Director of IaaC, Mr. Francesc Fernández, President of IaaC, Mr.Ramón García-Bragado, Deputy Mayor for Housing, Urban Planning and Council Internal affairs, (Ayuntamiento de Barcelona) and the Rector of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, UPC, Mr. Antoni Giró.
Tunis research presentation
April 2008
Heads of the Society of Tunis South Lake and the Tunis Urbanism Office visited IaaC to follow the research “Emergence on Med South”.

Med Sud is an investigation into the emergence in the South Mediterranean Sea as an entity that has been exploded and developed in different forms from its north and south. The investigation looks the Mediterranean dimension from different perspectives, looking for the local, regional and global relations that discover a territory that seems to be explored and defined enough, but still there are stronger potentials that open new and emergent opportunities for the sustainable development.

This research is part of the IaaC´s International Exchange program, this year together with the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico. The research project is directed by Willy Muller and Fred Guillaud and coordinated by Tomas Diez
